In short

A Verbier ski holiday means a village at 1,500 m in Valais, below Mont Fort at 3,330 m, at the heart of the 4 Vallées: 410 km of slopes on 82 lifts by the operator's count. The 2026/27 season is scheduled to open in Verbier on December 5, 2026, and Geneva Airport is the usual way in. We plan the whole trip around who is skiing: where you stay, the mountain days and a private instructor for each level in the group.

Verbier is a balcony over the Val de Bagnes, with Mont Fort above it and the whole 4 Vallées at the end of the lift. We choose where you stay and the instructor around the way your family skis.

The ski area

Verbier or the 4 Vallées?

Both. Verbier is the village and its own sector; the 4 Vallées is the linked area around it, with Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon, and 410 km of slopes on 82 lifts (Verbier 4Vallées). The Verbier side alone runs 36 lifts and 203 km of slopes and itineraries, and shares the Mont Fort sector with its neighbour.

The cable car to the top of Mont Fort, at 3,330 m, opens onto the Matterhorn, the Grand Combin and Mont Blanc on a clear morning. It is the moment most people remember of the week, whatever their level.

The mountain is changing. Téléverbier is building the Télémixte, cabins from Les Esserts at 1,700 m to Savoleyres at 2,200 m, with a new piste from Le Carrefour so you can ski from Les Ruinettes across to La Tzoumaz without the bus; the operator planned the whole line to run in 2026 (Téléverbier). The new six seat Lac 2 chairlift, open since the 2025/26 season, cut that ride from over five minutes to three (Verbier 4Vallées).

The mountain

Who is Verbier for?

Groups where strong skiers and beginners travel together. The strong skiers have Mont Fort and the freeride faces; at the end of March the Freeride World Tour final, Xtreme Verbier, is held on the Bec des Rosses at 3,223 m (Verbier). Beginners start on three free magic carpets at Les Esserts, Les Moulins and La Tzoumaz (Verbier 4Vallées).

On a mountain like this, one lesson for everyone wastes the week. We book private instruction by level, so a first timer has the quiet slopes of Les Esserts while the rest of the group goes high, and everyone meets again for lunch. Our guide to family ski lessons explains how that split works.

When to go

When is the best time to ski Verbier?

Between mid December and mid April, when the whole 4 Vallées is open. For 2026/27 Verbier and La Tzoumaz are scheduled from December 5, 2026 to April 25, 2027, while the full linked area runs from December 12, 2026 to April 18, 2027 (Verbier 4Vallées).

That gap matters: in the first and the last week of the season you ski Verbier, not the whole 4 Vallées, and Bruson closes earlier, on April 4, 2027. Christmas, New Year and the February holiday weeks fill first, so for those dates we book the instructor before anything else. Our guide on when to book a ski trip covers the timing week by week.

Getting there

How do you get to Verbier from Geneva?

Most people fly into Geneva and continue by road or by train. By train, Geneva Airport to Le Châble takes about 2 hours 20 minutes with one change, and the gondola climbs from Le Châble to Verbier (Swiss public transport timetable).

Since 2023 a lift links the Le Châble platform to the gondola station (Verbier 4Vallées). On a trip we plan you rarely need it: we arrange the transfer from whichever airport your flights land at, door to door, and private charter when the schedule calls for it.

Where you stay

Verbier village, Le Châble or La Tzoumaz?

Most families stay in Verbier itself, at 1,500 m, with the lifts and the beginner slopes of Les Esserts and Les Moulins in the village (Verbier 4Vallées). Le Châble, in the valley, has the train and the gondola. La Tzoumaz sits on the Savoleyres side, which the Télémixte is planned to join to Verbier on skis.

We do not sell from a fixed list of hotels or chalets. We look at who is coming, how each of them skis and how they like to spend the evening, then tell you where to stay, and why.

How we plan it

What does a private Verbier ski holiday include?

Everything between the flight and the last run: where you stay, a private instructor for each level, 4 Vallées lift passes, transfers, equipment and a concierge on the ground, with one point of contact from the first message to the flight home.

Patagonia Living is a ski travel agency based in Patagonia and operated worldwide, and skiing is all it plans. The full list is in what a private ski trip includes. When you are ready, plan your next trip with us.

Verbier, before you book

Questions people ask.

Is Verbier good for beginners?

Yes, with the right start. Beginners have three free magic carpets, at Les Esserts and Les Moulins in Verbier and one in La Tzoumaz, then move on to the Les Esserts, Les Moulins and Le Rouge lifts (Verbier 4Vallées). A private instructor keeps a first timer there until they are ready for more.

When does Verbier open for the 2026/27 season?

Verbier and La Tzoumaz are scheduled to open on December 5, 2026 and close on April 25, 2027; the whole 4 Vallées runs from December 12, 2026 to April 18, 2027 (Verbier 4Vallées). All dates depend on snow.

What is the difference between Verbier and the 4 Vallées?

Verbier is the village and its own ski sector. The 4 Vallées is the linked ski area it belongs to, with Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon: 410 km of slopes and 82 lifts in all (Verbier 4Vallées).

How do you get from Geneva to Verbier?

By road with a private transfer, or by train: about 2 hours 20 minutes from Geneva Airport to Le Châble with one change, then the gondola up to Verbier (Swiss public transport timetable). On a trip we plan, the transfer is arranged for you.

When is Xtreme Verbier?

At the end of March, as the final of the Freeride World Tour, on the Bec des Rosses (Verbier). The 2027 date has not been announced yet.

How far ahead should you book a Verbier ski holiday?

For Christmas, New Year and the February holiday weeks, as early as you can: private instructors and the most suitable places to stay go first. More in when to book a ski trip.
