In short
An Andermatt ski holiday means the Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis ski area: 180 km of slopes and 33 lifts, with the Gemsstock at 2,961 m (9,715 ft) above the village. For 2026/27 the Gemsstock is scheduled from November 14, 2026 to April 18, 2027, while the slopes over the Oberalp to Sedrun run from December 12, 2026 to April 4, 2027, and Zurich is about a 90 minute drive. We plan the whole trip around who is skiing: where you stay, the mountain days and a private instructor for each level in the group.
Andermatt is a quiet village in the heart of Switzerland, with the Gemsstock rising straight above it and a mountain train climbing toward Sedrun. We choose the base, the slopes and the instructor around the way your family skis.

The mountain
Who is Andermatt for?
Two kinds of skier, often in the same family. The Gemsstock, reached by cable car from the village to 2,961 m (Epic Pass), is a north facing mountain of steep, snowy descents for strong skiers. On the other side of the valley, the sunny Nätschen slopes are where first turns happen.
The Beginners' Park Matti sits on the sunny slope between Nätschen and Gütsch, with three magic carpets, reached by the Gütsch Express or by train to Nätschen (Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis).
For a family with mixed levels we book private instruction by level, so the experts take the Gemsstock and the first timers stay on gentle snow, and everyone meets again in the village for lunch. Our guide to family ski lessons explains how that split works.
The ski area
How do Andermatt, Sedrun and Disentis connect?
By lift and by train. From Andermatt the Gütsch Express climbs toward Nätschen and the Oberalp, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn runs from the village over the Oberalp Pass to Sedrun and Disentis (Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis), and Disentis joins through the Cuolm da Vi gondola. Together they make 180 km of slopes and 33 lifts (Vail Resorts).
The train is part of the skiing here: a red carriage across a white pass between runs is one of the images people take home. The Gemsstock is a separate mountain on the other side of the village, so a day there and a day toward Sedrun feel like two different places.
When to go
When is the best time to ski Andermatt?
It depends on who is skiing. For 2026/27 the Gemsstock is scheduled from November 14, 2026 to April 18, 2027, but the slopes over the Oberalp to Sedrun, and the kids' area at Valtgeva, run from December 12, 2026 to April 4, 2027, and Disentis opens daily on December 19 (Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis).
So a late November or mid April trip is a Gemsstock trip: wonderful for experts, thin for a beginner. For a mixed family we plan between mid December and early April, when every sector is turning. Christmas, New Year and the February school holiday weeks fill first; our guide on when to book a ski trip covers the timing.
Getting there
How do you get to Andermatt?
Zurich is about a 90 minute drive and Milan about two hours (Andermatt destination guide). By rail you travel via Göschenen, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn up to Andermatt, whose station sits in the center of the village, a few minutes from the Gütsch Express (Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis).
We arrange the flights and transfers from Zurich or Milan, a private car up the valley, and private charter when the schedule calls for it.
How we plan it
What does a private Andermatt ski holiday include?
Everything between the flight and the last run: where you stay, a private instructor for each level, lift passes, transfers, equipment and a concierge on the ground, with one point of contact from the first message to the trip home.
Patagonia Living is a ski travel agency based in Patagonia and operated worldwide, and skiing is all it plans. We do not sell from a fixed list of hotels or chalets: we look at who is coming and how they ski, then tell you where to stay, and why. The full list is in what a private ski trip includes. Andermatt, before you book
Questions people ask.
Is Andermatt good for beginners?
Yes, on the right side of the valley. The Gemsstock is for strong skiers, while the Beginners' Park Matti, between Nätschen and Gütsch, has three magic carpets on a sunny slope (Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis). The Nätschen and Oberalp side is scheduled from December 12, 2026 (Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis), so beginners should plan from mid December.
When does the Andermatt ski season start in 2026?
The Gemsstock is scheduled to open on November 14, 2026 and run to April 18, 2027. Andermatt, the Oberalp and Sedrun follow from December 12, 2026 to April 4, 2027, and Disentis runs daily from December 19 (Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis).
Is Andermatt on the Epic Pass?
Yes. The Epic Pass gives unlimited access and the Epic Local Pass five days. Pass holders collect an access card at a ticket window with photo ID, because mobile passes cannot be used at the lifts here (Epic Pass).
How do you get from Zurich to Andermatt?
By road it is about 90 minutes (Andermatt destination guide). By train you change at Göschenen for the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn up to Andermatt (Andermatt+Sedrun+Disentis). On a trip we plan, a private transfer meets you at the airport.
Is Andermatt connected to Sedrun and Disentis?
Yes. Lifts over the Oberalp and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn link Andermatt with Sedrun, and Disentis joins through the Cuolm da Vi gondola, for 180 km of slopes on one ski area (Vail Resorts).
How far ahead should you book an Andermatt ski holiday?
For Christmas, New Year and the February holiday weeks, as early as you can: private instructors and the most suitable rooms go first. January and March leave more room. More in when to book a ski trip.
