In short

A Kitzbühel ski holiday means a medieval town in Tyrol, Austria, with 233 km of slopes and 58 lifts around it and lifts reaching 2,000 m. The 2026/27 season starts on November 6, 2026, the whole ski link is planned to run from December 11, 2026 to March 29, 2027, and the Hahnenkamm Races fill the town from January 18 to 24, 2027. We plan the whole trip around who is skiing: the dates, where you stay, the mountain days and a private instructor for each level in the group.

Kitzbühel is a Tyrolean town of painted facades and church bells, with a gondola rising from its streets into wide, wooded mountains. We choose the dates, the base and the instructor around the way your family skis.

The mountain

Who is Kitzbühel for?

Families and mixed groups who want long, rolling blue and red runs, mountain huts at lunch and a real town at night. Of the marked runs, 94 km are blue, 67 km red and 20 km black (Kitzbühel Tourismus), and free practice lifts sit in the valley at nine points, from Kitzbühel itself to Jochberg, Pass Thurn, Reith and Kirchberg.

Strong skiers come for the Streif, the Hahnenkamm downhill course, and the open slopes toward Pengelstein and the Resterhöhe. For a family with mixed levels we book private instruction by level, so a first timer learns on an easy practice lift while the rest of the group skis the mountain, and everyone meets again for lunch.

Our guide to family ski lessons explains how that split works.

The ski area

How the Kitzbühel ski area fits together

Three zones share one pass: Hahnenkamm, Pengelstein and Kirchberg; the Kitzbüheler Horn across the valley; and Jochberg with Pass Thurn, joined to the Hahnenkamm side by the 3S cable car (Kitzbühel Tourismus).

The Hahnenkammbahn leaves from the edge of the old town and climbs around 800 metres in eight minutes (Kitzbühel Tourismus), so the first run starts a short walk from breakfast. The Kitzbüheler Horn, reached from the other side of town, is a mountain of its own, and we plan which side each day starts on around the group.

When to go

When is the best time to ski Kitzbühel?

Between December 11, 2026 and March 29, 2027, when KitzSki plans to run the whole ski link. The season itself opens on November 6, 2026 on the Resterkogel, the core Hahnenkamm area runs from late November, and from March 30 to April 4, 2027 the finale is on Hahnenkamm, Fleckalm and Pengelstein only, all weather permitting (KitzSki).

The town sits low, so the resort leans on more than 1,260 snow guns (Kitzbühel Tourismus), and January and February tend to be the safest weeks for snow.

Race week is its own decision. The 87th Hahnenkamm Races run from January 18 to 24, 2027, with the Super G on Friday, the downhill on Saturday and the slalom on Sunday (Kitzbühel Tourismus). Come for it and book very early, or plan the week before or after for quieter slopes. More in when to book a ski trip.

Getting there

How do you get to Kitzbühel?

Fly into Salzburg, 81 km away and about 1.5 hours by road, Innsbruck, 96 km, or Munich, 127 km (Kitzbühel Tourismus).

Trains from each airport city reach Kitzbühel, usually with a change at Wörgl, and a vignette is required on Austrian motorways if you drive. We arrange the private transfer from whichever airport your flights land at, and private charter when the schedule calls for it.

Where you stay

The old town or a village in the ski area?

The old town puts you near the Hahnenkammbahn, the shops and dinner on foot, and in the middle of it all during race week. The villages around the ski area, such as Kirchberg, Jochberg and Reith, have their own lifts and quieter evenings, with the town a short drive away.

We do not sell from a fixed list of hotels or chalets. We look at who is coming, how each of them skis and how they like to spend the evening, then tell you where to stay, and why. For the evenings, our guide to après skiing sets the tone.

How we plan it

What does a private Kitzbühel ski holiday include?

Everything between the flight and the last run: where you stay, a private instructor for each level, lift passes, transfers, equipment and a concierge on the ground, with one point of contact from the first message to the flight home.

Patagonia Living is a ski travel agency based in Patagonia and operated worldwide, and skiing is all it plans. The full list is in what a private ski trip includes. Plan your next trip with us.

Kitzbühel, before you book

Questions people ask.

Is Kitzbühel good for beginners?

Yes, with the right start. There are free practice lifts in the valley at nine points and 94 km of blue runs (Kitzbühel Tourismus). A private instructor keeps a first timer on easy ground until they are ready for the long blues.

Is Kitzbühel snow sure?

The town is low, so the resort relies on more than 1,260 snow guns and on stored snow for its early start on the Resterkogel (Kitzbühel Tourismus). The whole ski link is planned from December 11, 2026 to March 29, 2027, weather permitting.

When is the Hahnenkamm race in 2027?

The 87th Hahnenkamm Races run from January 18 to 24, 2027: Super G on Friday, downhill on Saturday, slalom on Sunday (Kitzbühel Tourismus). The town is at its fullest that week.

When does the Kitzbühel ski season start and end in 2026/27?

KitzSki plans to open on November 6, 2026 on the Resterkogel and to close on April 4, 2027, with the full ski link from December 11 to March 29 (KitzSki). All dates depend on the weather and snow.

Which airport is closest to Kitzbühel?

Salzburg, 81 km away, then Innsbruck at 96 km and Munich at 127 km (Kitzbühel Tourismus). We arrange the transfer, timed to your flight.
