Every northern-hemisphere resort is closed in July and August, which leaves one honest answer for anyone who wants to ski then: go south. In practice that means Argentina, and for us it means Bariloche.
What the season looks like
Around Bariloche, roughly July to mid-September, with the most reliable snow usually falling between late July and the end of August. That is about ten weeks, short by Alpine standards and worth planning around. Further south at Cerro Castor, and across the border on the Chilean volcanoes, the season opens in June and runs into October, which is the argument for those areas when your dates are fixed at the edges.
What Cerro Catedral offers
It is the largest ski area in South America, just under 1,200 hectares, rising from a base at 1,030 metres to a summit a little above 2,100. Half is groomed and half is open off-piste, and the whole thing looks down at Lake Nahuel Huapi. The scale surprises people who arrive expecting a novelty season.
What is different about the snow
Patagonian snow comes off the Pacific heavy and full of moisture, and the wind moves it constantly, loading one face and scouring the next. Skiing it well means following the aspects that filled overnight rather than working through a trail map, which is the single strongest argument for a local instructor here.
How we plan around a short season
With alternatives agreed in advance. A heli day, a lake crossing and a quieter day on the groomed runs are all planned, and the weather picks the order. That is not a hedge: it is the only honest way to sell ten weeks of Patagonian winter.
Common questions
Can you ski in July?
Yes, in the southern hemisphere. Around Bariloche the season runs roughly July to mid-September; further south at Cerro Castor, and on the Chilean volcanoes, it opens in June and runs into October.
How long is the Patagonian ski season?
Around Bariloche, about ten weeks. Cerro Castor in Tierra del Fuego and the Chilean areas run longer. Either way we plan those trips with flexibility built in rather than promising a specific descent months ahead.
Is heli-skiing available in Patagonia?
It is one of the experiences we coordinate in the Argentine Andes, always subject to conditions and to the operator's call on the day.
