Llao Llao Hotel & Resort is a lakeside resort about 25 km from the centre of Bariloche, and it sits on a peninsula, not at the foot of the lifts. Here is what it is, what it offers, and how a ski week around it works.

What is Llao Llao Hotel & Resort, and where is it?

Llao Llao is a resort on Av. Ezequiel Bustillo Km 25 in Bariloche, Río Negro, as its own website puts it. Wikipedia places it on a hill between Lake Moreno and Lake Nahuel Huapi, in the foothills of the Andes. One travel company describes it as about 25 km from the centre of Bariloche. The airport is about 36 km away, according to a tourism guide. Other sources give slightly different figures for the airport, so read these as a rough picture, not a timetable.

The hotel has a long story. Wikipedia says the original wooden hotel, designed by Alejandro Bustillo, burned soon after its completion in 1939. Bustillo then built a new one in concrete and stone, which opened on 15 December 1940. It closed in 1976 and reopened in 1993. According to the same page, it is owned equally by the Sutton Dabbah Group and the IRSA Group.

What does Llao Llao offer?

The hotel's website describes 205 rooms, including studios and suites, with views over lakes, forest and mountains. It also lists a spa, an indoor and outdoor pool, an 18 hole golf course set between mountains and lakes, Patagonian lamb and international cuisine, and an afternoon tea it calls Llao Llao Tea. A tourism guide adds cabins, a sauna and a gym.

For winter, the hotel's website lists a Hospitality Lounge on Cerro Catedral, called Refugio Llao Llao in Spanish, and a commercial listing describes it as a warm place for the hours after skiing. Ask the hotel what it includes before you plan around it. For rates and room details, go to llaollao.com. The hotel publishes its own tariffs.

How does Llao Llao fit into a ski week at Cerro Catedral?

It fits as a lake and spa base with a transfer to the mountain each ski day. Cerro Catedral lies 19 km from Bariloche inside Nahuel Huapi National Park. The listing above puts Llao Llao about 20 km from the Catedral ski centre. So the day starts with a drive, and on a family trip that drive is part of the plan: boots, lesson time and a ride home at the end of the day all have to line up.

This is where we come in. For a week in Bariloche we arrange the skiing around wherever you stay: a private instructor chosen around the family, passes, and transfers to and from the mountain. Hotel or house, the skiing side is handled the same way. We have no agreement with Llao Llao, and we do not say it is available for any given week. If it is where you want to stay, we build the days around it. Private ski instruction and flights and transfers cover that part.

For the skiing itself, see a full day at Catedral, start to close.

When should you go to Llao Llao?

Go in ski season if skiing is the point of the trip, and treat the rest of the year as a different trip. Catedral is a winter mountain. As an example of one year, in 2026 the mountain opened partially on Monday 6 July, starting with the learning area and adding terrain gradually as conditions allowed. That is one season, not a calendar, and we cannot promise snow. For current opening information, check the Cerro Catedral website.

Outside winter, the hotel's own website points to its spa, pool and golf course, which is a different kind of trip from the one we plan. For how the southern season is planned around a short winter, see Southern Hemisphere skiing: what to check first.

Hotel or private house: which base suits your family?

Choose by how your family lives on a trip. A hotel suits a couple or a family who want the services under one roof: spa, restaurants, pool, no kitchen to think about. A staffed private house suits a larger group or a family that wants its own pace, with its own meals and its own space between ski days.

Three questions help you decide:

  1. How many of you are travelling, and do the children need their own rooms and a place to rest after lessons?
  2. Do you want to eat in a restaurant each night, or have dinner arranged at home?
  3. How much of the week is skiing, and how much is the hotel itself?

We handle both sides in Bariloche. See curated accommodations for hotels and private houses for staffed homes. If you are still deciding on the mountain too, matching your family to the right mountain is a good place to start.
