In this guide
The camera sits above Aspen Mountain in our reel filmed from above it. Downtown sits right at the base, roofs and streets small against the slope rising over them. That one frame says more about Aspen than any list of lift stats. Three other mountains share the valley, but only this one has the whole run end at the edge of town.
Why does Aspen Mountain rise straight out of downtown?
Aspen Mountain's base sits against the edge of downtown itself, not a shuttle ride away from it. Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass each sit further out in the valley, connected by a free RFTA shuttle rather than a walk, the same four mountains Aspen's own chamber maps out for visitors. That difference is why the view in our reel reads the way it does: the whole mountain fills the frame, and the town sits directly under it, not beside it.
What does that layout change about a ski day here?
It changes how the day ends more than how it starts. A run on Aspen Mountain can finish steps from a restaurant table instead of a parking lot. Aspen Mountain carries no beginner terrain at all, while Buttermilk holds about 35 percent of the four mountains' beginner runs. Stronger skiers tend to spend their day on Ajax while the rest of the group starts lower down, a split covered in which Aspen mountain suits whom. The group still meets in the same town at the end of the day, because that is where Ajax drops them.
How does this change where a trip gets based?
Where someone stays should shape how the rest of the trip plans around that view, more than it would at a mountain with a parking lot between the lifts and the town. Staying close to the base of Aspen Mountain keeps that walk back short after the last run. It is the same hour we plan around in the après hour in American resort towns. A family spending most days on Snowmass instead usually bases itself in Snowmass Village, a choice covered in what a private ski trip includes. We decide which side of that split fits a group before we book anything.

The view from above only shows one week of the year. How the four mountains open and close across the season, and why Christmas week fills first, is covered in Christmas week in Aspen. Picking the right week to book around that view is covered in when to book a ski trip.
Common questions
Why does Aspen Mountain sit right above downtown Aspen?
Aspen Mountain was built directly against the edge of town, with its base at the bottom of Aspen's Main Street rather than a drive or shuttle away. Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass all sit further out in the valley. That closeness is what our reel filmed from above Aspen Mountain is built around.
Is Aspen Mountain good for beginners?
No. Aspen Mountain carries none of the four mountains' beginner terrain, while Buttermilk holds about 35 percent of it. A family with mixed levels usually splits between the two and meets back in town, covered in what that layout changes about a ski day here and in which Aspen mountain suits whom.
When does Aspen Mountain ski best?
From November 26, 2026 through April 18, 2027 this season, with Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk opening December 12. Conditions allowing, any week from December through early April works, and Christmas week fills first, covered in Christmas week in Aspen and in when to book a ski trip.
Do you need a car to get between Aspen's four mountains?
No. A free RFTA skier shuttle runs between all four mountains in winter, and the same system runs a free bus from Aspen/Pitkin County Airport into town. The trips we plan include those transfers, covered in what a private ski trip includes.
Where does the footage of Aspen Mountain above the town come from?
From a reel we filmed from above Aspen Mountain, looking straight down at the town sitting under it. That same layout, the whole mountain above and the town below, is the subject of this guide.
