In short

A Niseko ski holiday means four resorts on one mountain, Niseko Annupuri in Hokkaido: Hanazono, Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Annupuri, all on one All Mountain Pass. The 2026/27 season is scheduled to open on November 28, 2026, and New Chitose Airport is about two hours away by car. We plan the trip around who is skiing: where you stay, the powder days and a private instructor for each level in the group.

Niseko is light, dry Hokkaido powder falling through winter woods, with the snow cone of Mount Yotei across the valley and a hot spring waiting at the end of the day. We choose where you stay and who skis with whom, so every level in the group finds its snow.

The snow

Why does Niseko get so much powder?

Winter winds from the Eurasian continent pick up moisture over the warm currents of the Sea of Japan and drop it on Niseko Annupuri as dry, light snow (Niseko United). The resorts put the average at 12 to 16 m a season, over 80 to 100 or more snowfall days (Niseko United).

Much of that snow sits in the trees and beyond the gates. Niseko United runs nine backcountry gates, and its Niseko Rules are simple: enter only through an open gate, never duck a rope, and carry a helmet and an avalanche beacon (Niseko Rules). When gates are closed, the backcountry is closed.

For a day beyond the gates we book a qualified local guide and the right equipment, and keep the rest of the group on the groomed runs with their own instructor.

The mountain

Who is Niseko for?

Mixed groups and families as much as powder skiers. Of the 76 runs across the four resorts, 31 are rated beginner, 26 intermediate and 19 advanced, and there are four international snowsports schools and three kids areas run by the resorts (Niseko United).

That spread lets a first timer learn on a quiet slope while stronger skiers spend the morning in the trees. We book private instruction by level rather than one lesson for everyone, and plan the day so the group meets again for lunch. Our guide to family ski lessons explains how that split works.

When to go

When is the best time to ski Niseko?

January and February, which JNTO names as the peak of Japan's season for their consistent snowfall (JNTO). For 2026/27 all four resorts are scheduled to open on November 28, 2026; Niseko Village closes on April 4, Hanazono on April 11, and Annupuri and Grand Hirafu run to May 5, 2027 (Niseko United).

Night skiing runs from December 12, 2026 to March 22, 2027 on all four areas, so a powder morning can turn into an evening on lit runs. Christmas and New Year fill first; read when to book a ski trip for the timing.

Getting there

How do you get to Niseko?

Fly into New Chitose Airport near Sapporo, about 90 minutes by air from Tokyo (JNTO). From there Niseko Village is about 110 km by National Highway 276, roughly 120 minutes by car (Niseko Village).

The train goes via Otaru, about 72 minutes on the Rapid Airport and then about 90 minutes on a local line with limited services (Niseko United). With bags, skis and children, a private transfer from the arrivals hall is simpler, and we arrange it with your flights and transfers.

Where you stay

Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village or Annupuri?

Grand Hirafu has more terrain than any of the other three and a village of hotels, apartments, shops and restaurants at its base; Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri are quieter, each with its own base (Niseko United). One All Mountain Pass covers all four, so the choice is about evenings and pace, not terrain.

The lifts are changing this winter. Niseko Village is building the eight passenger Mori no Gondola, with its first stage planned for 2026/27, and Grand Hirafu is upgrading Ace #3 to a four person chair, from 1,029 to 2,400 passengers an hour (Niseko United). We look at who is coming and how they ski, then tell you where to stay, and why.

How we plan it

What does a private Niseko ski holiday include?

Everything between the flight and the last run: where you stay, a private instructor for each level, lift passes, transfers from New Chitose, equipment and a concierge on the ground, with one point of contact from the first message to the flight home.

Patagonia Living is a ski travel agency based in Patagonia and operated worldwide, and skiing is all it plans. The full list is in what a private ski trip includes. Talk to us.

Niseko, before you book

Questions people ask.

Is Niseko good for beginners?

Yes. 31 of the 76 runs across the four resorts are rated beginner, and the resorts run four international snowsports schools (Niseko United). A first timer progresses fastest with a private instructor who knows which slopes are quiet that day.

When does Niseko open for the 2026/27 season?

All four resorts are scheduled to open on November 28, 2026, snow permitting. Niseko Village closes on April 4, Hanazono on April 11, and Annupuri and Grand Hirafu on May 5, 2027 (Niseko United).

How far is Niseko from New Chitose Airport?

About 110 km, roughly 120 minutes by car to Niseko Village in normal conditions (Niseko Village). Snow on the road can add time, which is why we plan a private transfer that waits for your flight.

Can you ski off piste in Niseko?

Yes, through the official backcountry gates and only when they are open. The Niseko Rules ask for a helmet and an avalanche beacon, and ducking a rope is not allowed (Niseko United). We book a qualified local guide for gate days.

Is there night skiing in Niseko?

Yes. For 2026/27, night skiing is scheduled from December 12, 2026 to March 22, 2027 at all four resorts (Niseko United).
